Our only “cow” (a female who’s had at least one calf) is named Stella Blue. You may have seen her in our social media posts because she’s awesome. She’s had 3 calves which have all been males. She can have about 1 calf a year and we rebreed her after about 6 months.

I had never heard of winter sowing before last year. I had seen people with milk jugs in their yards and thought they were just really advanced gardeners. Little did I know they were just working easier, not harder! Basically winter sowing is a way to create a mini greenhouse and help seedlings to harden off while they are growing. Its pretty easy, though we failed miserably last year. Here’s what we learned.

It’s been a crazy couple of years and 2022 doesn’t seem to be any different. Even if you don’t follow the news it’s hard to miss that prices are going up and sometimes you can’t find what you’re looking for.  Buying bulk meat is a win/win.

One of our biggest learning experiences has been feeding our animals, especially our pigs. We have pigs in all areas of development in Iowa. Our midwest climate has all the extremes.

As you’ll remember, back in August 2020, Iowa was one of several states to be hit by a windstorm (now called a Derecho). The Derecho caused massive damage to our area and to Uncle Gs Farm as well.

2021 Was an eventful year. We tried lots of new things and learned a lot along the way.
