2021 Derecho update

Outbuilding with several uprooted trees on the roof.

As you’ll remember, back in August 2020, Iowa was one of several states to be hit by a windstorm (now called a Derecho). The Derecho caused massive damage to our area and to Uncle Gs Farm as well. We lost scores of trees, including the maple trees we’d been tapping for syrup, and extensive damage to a barn, an outbuilding, and our home’s roof.

Our insurance company has a two year window for repairs. This is pretty generous, except the damage was so widespread that it’s been basically impossible for us to get an estimate, much less a contractor, to come out and look at our barn and out building. The one bright spot in the cleanup was the roof of our house was completed thanks to an amazing local contractor in August.

We are hoping and praying for all the repairs to be complete in the next 8 months so our farm can be whole again. The roof under these trees has been exposed to the elements for the past year and the extent of the damage to the structure cannot be assessed until the roof is taken off. We were super blessed to have not had more damage and to have friends and neighbors come help us in the aftermath of the storm. When you hear about natural disasters in different parts of the country and world send those folks your prayers, give them some grace, and consider a monetary donation to trusted organizations who help those in need.
