Flat Tire for $800 Please

The farm we live on is pretty old. There are signatures in the concrete of the cow barn dated from the early 1900’s. From what we’ve gathered by talking with folks is that this was a cattle ranch first and then a generation or two later the family got into the antique business.

The story goes that during the farm crisis the demand for antiques dried up but this family kept buying. They went broke in the 1980s and the homestead fell into disrepair.

We’ve seen some pretty awesome photographs of the farm from back in the day. Before Google Earth planes would fly the countryside photographing the farms below. Here’s a picture of “our” farm from 1973. (The number one song in August 1973 was THE MORNING AFTER by Maureen McGovern)

You’re saying, “this is nice and all but what does it have to do with flat tires?”

Well, since this farm’s hay day there have been several buildings removed. And by removed I mean the wood was removed but the nails magically fell to the ground, we’re covered by dirt and nail gnomes dig them up and leave them in my driveway to this day! I am not 100% sure about the gnomes but I can show you how many of the buildings in 1973 have been

So as Casey Kasem used to say, “Keep reaching for the stars” but I’d like to add, be sure to look down once in a while too, especially if you live on an old farm.

Fun Fact: Casey Kasum started hosting American Top 40 back in July of 1970.

Fun Fact 2: The number one song in August 1973 was THE MORNING AFTER by  Maureen McGovern. I took a guess at when the photo of the farm was taken based on the height of the corn and the angle of the sun. (nah, it’s just a guess)

Fun Fact 3: I thought it was clever to make up the word “nail gnome” but apparently someone came up with it before me and they look nothing like what I’d expect! (the gnomes not the person)
